Produced by Russell, it was made in their Massachusetts works sometime after 1872. The piece is crisply stamped with that patent date, reading, J. This is not a reproduction but an original piece found here in remarkably well-preserved condition. Its sturdy, hand-forged carbon steel blade is reinforced at the bolster with a clad, flat ferrule over a full and fattened tang, which is pinned with steel over the finest old-growth rosewood handles. The entire piece is immaculate--no cracks or looseness at all. As you can see in the photos, it's a superbly crafted piece on par with the best ever made by that most legendary of cutlery-makers. Its condition is astonishingly free of the cracks, nicks and other problems that often plague knives of this age. Even more impressive than its beauty and condition, the most remarkable thing about the piece, by far, is its performance in the kitchen. It is a VERY remarkable knife, indeed, waferizing onions, meats and anything else I've put in its way. Large enough for small slicing duty, but deft enough to be used for peeling, paring and other utility work, it's a knife made to please small and large hands alike in the pursuit of culinary perfection. You know how difficult it is to come by fine, smaller chef knives in carbon steel, since most knowing chefs won't part with theirs until they're dead of the knife is worn out. Do your kitchen arsenal a favor and don't pass on this gem. Also will make an exceptional gift for any hard-to-shop-for chef on your list!
